Iced Strawberry Matcha Recipe for Hormone Health

iced matcha recipe vegan

I’ve been a daily matcha drinker for over 7 years. I drink coffee too, but I always start my day with a hot organic soy milk latte. I was inspired by this iced strawberry version on a trip to Los Angelos years ago. Locally here in Vancouver, a matcha cafe also makes a really yummy one. I prefer less sweetener and saving a few bucks, so I decided to start making this at home. The grocery store had organic strawberries for $4 off regular price so this has been on repeat.

In 2019, I shared my hot matcha recipe. The delicious basic one I have most mornings, head here to check out more health benefits in that blog post.

This is just a drink, but what if you drink matcha and soy milk daily? That starts to add up to change, small shifts in the body.

Are you looking to support your sex hormone balance? Maybe you have really heavy periods? Or maybe, you’re entering perimenopause and want the benefit of soy rich isoflavones? Or maybe your just an anxious person that stopped drinking coffee and turned to matcha? Well, this drink may help. It looks beautiful, tastes delicious and it’s easy to make! Let’s go over some of the health benefits.

Matcha:

  • improve dysbiosis by supporting gut microbiota

  • reduction in H. pylori, especially when combined with manuka honey (if not vegan)

  • a source of L-theanine, which leads to calming neurotransmitters being released that makes you feel calm and alert

  • high in antioxidants to fight free radical stress and inflammation

  • may reduce cortisol levels

Soy milk:

  • high in isoflavones which may reduce age-related diseases including cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, hormone-dependent cancer and loss of cognitive function. The mechanisms involved may include weak estrogenic activity (a good thing) and antioxidants

  • 8 grams of protein per cup

  • a source of added calcium for menopause and bone health (estrogen is protective of bones and this is in decline)

  • blood sugar balancing: healthy fats and protein from soy milk support energy levels more than a high sugar drink (sugar/oat milk without fats/protein)

Cheers to an ice matcha on a sunny day

Good for you and tastes delicious!

Ingredients

  • 3 ice cubes

  • 3/4 cup unsweetened soy milk

  • 3 strawberries

  • 1 tsp of ceremonial organic matcha

  • enough hot water to mix matcha, not boiling

  • sweetener optional: maple syrup

  • optional: adaptogen powders or tinctures such as lions mane, schisandra

Instructions

  • muddle your strawberries with a pestle and mortar and add to your cup

  • add ice cubes

  • froth your soy milk in a milk frother on the cold setting or use a handheld battery operated frother and add to cup

  • heat kettle to 200, add a tiny amount of water to a bowl and whisk matcha in a W or Z shape until it mixes well and bubbles

  • pour matcha into the cup and watch the colours slowly mix

I drank mine with a straw and switch to sips at the end for the bigger chunks of strawberries.

notes:

  • if you don’t have one, you can try a small handheld blender or chop very finely

  • no need to froth the milk, it just provides a nice consistency

  • don’t have a matcha whisk? use your handheld frother again

I hope you love this beautiful drink. Tag me if you make it and I’ll re-share it @jordanbruce.nutrition on Instagram
