Endometriosis Symptoms: It's Endometriosis Awareness Month
It’s endometriosis awareness month so I thought I’d start by sharing what it is. In future posts, I’ll cover symptoms and potential causes. This is an inflammatory condition. It’s estimated 1 in 10 women, transgender and gender diverse people have endometriosis - that’s about 200 million worldwide.
Comment with a 💛 to raise awareness and show you’re thinking of those with endometriosis.
Endo = within
Metra = uterus
Osis = disease process
The most common site is the ovaries leading to a ovarian cyst called endometrioma or chocolate cyst. Lesions can also occur on Fallopian tubes, pelvic ligaments, on the outside of the uterus, bowel and bladder. They respond to the hormonal changes of the menstrual cycle and swell/bleed just as the endometrium does. This can make fertility harder - IVF is an option!
It is only diagnosed with a laparoscopy, but a pelvic exam and ultrasound is a good place to start.
This is a worldwide event to raise awareness. It often takes 10 years to get a diagnosis. Thinking of those in pain and people searching for answers 🌜💛
Some Symptoms Associated with Endometriosis
very painful periods (Dysmenorrhea)
hard time conceiving
pain during sex
nausea or vomiting
short follicular phase
pain with urination
mood swings
anxiety
bloating
headaches
irregular cycle
heavy menstrual flow
If you are feeling any of these symptoms do book in with a doctor to rule out anymore more serious. A laparoscopy is needed to diagnose endometriosis, but starting with a pelvic exam is good.
