My Go To Vegan Prebiotic Foods For Gut Health

The other day I shared my favourite overall gut foods. I got a few questions on my go to prebiotic foods, so here you go! Prebiotics are important because they’re food for our bacteria. This is just a small list as there are so many others out there, such as garlic, medicinal mushrooms and unripe bananas.

The most recent definition I found (often gets updated): “a nondigestible compound that, through its metabolization by microorganisms in the gut, modulates composition and/or activity of the gut microbiota, thus conferring a beneficial physiologic effect on the host.” Essentially, it doesn’t get broken down and it has a benefit in the gut.

Health benefits
- increase in Bifidobacteria & Lactobacilli
- produce beneficial metabolites
- helps with calcium absorption
- decrease in protein fermentation
- decrease in pathogenic bacteria 🦠
- lower allergy risk
- impacts gut barrier permeability (leaky gut)
- improved immune system
